The Bunk Room
St
Curig's Church offers a bunkroom with four beds which is ideal
for walkers and climbers as well as being a favourite with
teenagers.
A
full cooked breakfast and bedding is included in the price.
The
hot tub can be used for £5 per person. The bathroom
facilities are slightly bracing, but has a super view to the
Carneddau mountains

It¹s probably true to
say that there¹s nowhere else quite like St Curig¹s in
North Wales. Ancient and modern stylishly combine in this B&B
set within a 19th century church in the mountain village of Capel
Curig. Where else can you sleep beneath a carved stone pulpit, enjoy
a hot tub under the stars or play table tennis beneath a fabulous
19th century mosaic ceiling? And all with lovely views of Snowdonia¹s
mountains from every window
This was the vision Alice
Douglas had when she first came to the village ten years ago and
decided to make the church her home. The story of the conversion, a
rollercoaster ride through planning regulations, builders and love
affairs was described in Alice¹s fortnightly Sunday Times
column. it¹s probably also true to say that there¹s
nowhere else like St Curig¹s for atmosphere.
Breakfast is served at a
large communal table in the spacious kitchen on the mezzanine level
giving a bird¹s eye view of the church¹s glittering mosaic
ceiling. A hearty full Welsh breakfast, that will power you up any
of the surrounding hills or fuel you through a day of sightseeing,
is served here. But lighter options are always available too. For
refuelling in the evening, three pubs serving meals are in easy
walking distance and there are good restaurants within a 10-minute
drive.
On a typical weekend, the
St Curigs is full of walkers and climbers, families, writers,
photographers, romantics S and there¹s never a dull moment.
This is a family home, with all the toys pets and friends that that
involves. You¹re likely to be greeted by Brecon, the friendly
German Shepherd, and the cats may want to curl up next to you on the
sofa. But, if you¹re not a dog person, let Alice know and she
will keep him inside when you arrive. It¹s also worth knowing
that the atmosphere at St Curig¹s at times can be that of a
house party. And, because of the nature of the building, those
lying-in may hear some noise in the morning from early risers keen
to get out on the mountains. That said, all guests are asked to keep
noise to a minimum after 11pm when the pinball machine is switched
off and the table football machine is off-limits. By then most
guests are ready for their beds and a good night¹s sleep in
preparation for another day out in SnowdoniaS |
Being located in Capel Curig the converted church is ideal for those
wishing to explore Snowdonia - walkers, climbers and tourists alike

Curigs is a no smoking establishment
From St Curigs the three main mountain ranges of Snowdonia are
easily accessible by foot, car or bus - it is only 10 minutes drive
to Pen-y-Pas
There are three good hostelries within walking distance all
providing a good range of food and drink - opposite St Curigs you
will find the Pinnacle Stores complex and also Joe Browns outdoor
activiites shop

The dining room and guests
lounge area is located in the former apse featuring a towering
ceiling, stained glass windows and the lavishly decorated mosaic
ceiling commissioned in memory of his wife by William Edward
Sackville-West - the estate manager to Lord Penrhyn. Made by the
Salviati company whose other work grace the Houses of Parliament and
St. Pauls Cathedral

Whilst the bunkhouse bathroom
may be sufficient for many after a good day out in the mountains for
those who come prepared our outdoor whirlpool hot tub could be the
way to relax and ease those aching muscles |

A little history for those who are interested - until 1848, Capel
Curig formed a chapelry in the parish of Llandegai but was
administered by the priest from Dolwyddelan with worship being held
in the old St Curigs church which dates from the 13th century and
was originally Curigs Chapel from which the village got its name.
With the growing number of visitors to Capel Curig in the 19th
century the old St Curigs church (now St
Julitta's ) became too small to accommodate the congregation
and the new St Curigs church was opened in 1883. The new church was
dedicated to St. Curig, the boy martyr and the dedication of the old
church was then changed to St. Julitta - Curig's mother. Whilst
services where transferred to the new church the graveyard at the
old church continued in use until quite recently - there are no
graves in the grounds of St Curigs
St Curigs was deconcecrated in 1992 and was taken over by the
current owner in 1998 to be lovingly transformed to provide luxury
bed and breakfast accommodation - the story of the conversion being

St Curigs can easily be found on
the western side of the village opposite the junction of the A5 and
the A4086 |
